Richard Mantey

Richard Mantey, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on August 15, 2009 after a short illness. Richard was born on August 17, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Richard Victor, Sr. and Mildred (Willis) Mantey. On February 1, 1958, he married Cynthia Moe and together they provided the foundation for our loving, close-knit family by setting a wonderful example of integrity and solid values. To this union were born three children: Beth Mantey, Watertown, SD; Richard (Kim) V. Mantey III, Appleton, WI; and Ryan (Elizabeth/Beth) Mantey, Green Bay, WI. He had a special relationship with his seven grandchildren, Jim and Tom Mulholland of Watertown, SD; Max and Gus Mantey of Appleton, WI; Victor Zold of Monico, WI; and Claire and Grace Mantey, Green Bay; WI. Dick was looking forward to the birth of his newest grandson, Jack Richard Mantey in about a month. Richard was an active and involved member of Pilgrim Congregational Church, always willing to share his talents; reaching out to fellow parishioners. He was very devoted to his family, friends and even strangers, taking the time to listen to others, putting them first, no matter how busy he was. He cherished his family and made every event special. His door was always open when life’s troubles drew us back home for loving advice and assistance. Richard’s life was full of rich experiences, both personal and professional and he was always available to offer counsel to his children and grandchildren, either in their personal lives or to assist them in their chosen careers. Having worked primarily in the financial industry, Dick was most proud of his contribution to the Credit Union movement while working for the Wisconsin Credit Union League in Milwaukee. He held significant leadership positions and often traveled extensively to share his knowledge of the business with others through statewide and national seminars. He was in demand as an accomplished public speaker, authored a trade-related book and appeared in trade magazine advertising as a result of his commitment to invest in cutting edge technology for his trade. Dick also enjoyed mentoring, and loved watching employees grow to their full potential. He retired as the Vice-President of Ripco Credit Union in Rhinelander, WI in 1995. Richard had a passion for nature and the outdoors, especially the northern woods of Wisconsin and spent many hours fishing with his family and friends. After retiring to Green Bay, he treasured visits to his son’s cottage in Eagle River. Dick and Cyndi enjoyed their travels to Bermuda with their special friends and with each other. The Koi pond in his back yard brought him great pleasure. Many hours were spent caring for it as well as the fish and he often just sat quietly beside it to acknowledge the beauty. Richard was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved to watch them play. He also liked to get in a round of golf when time permitted. All of these things meant a lot to him, but his true pride and joy was his grandchildren~ he loved them so dearly and never missed an opportunity to have them spend time with “Papa”. The entire family would like to offer a heartfelt “Thank you” to Dr. Amy James, as she walked with us on his journey, and her team, all of the caring nurses involved with his care at Bellin Hospital, Bellin Home Health, Bellin Cancer Team, and Unity Hospice. Gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 10:00 A.M to 11:00 A.M. at Pilgrim Congregational Church 991 Pilgrim Way. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Scott Naevestad officiating with a luncheon at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church in Richard’s name
