Bernard J. Danhieux

December 11, 1923 - December 2, 2010

Bernard Joseph Danhieux,86, passed peacefully into the hands of our Lord on Thursday December 2, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born to Joseph and Lucy (Bouchard) Danhieux in Green Bay on December 11, 1923. He lived his entire life in the Green Bay area. During his teenage years he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from West High School in 1943 and two days later received his draft notice. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corp as a radio operator on B-17s. Following the war, he attended UW- Platteville and St. Norbert’s College, and in 1947 he accepted employment with the Wisconsin Highway Department where he worked for 38 ½ years. In 1951 Bernie married Charelene Loeffler in Spalding, Michigan. Together they have four children: Dr. Kathleen Maes, St. Petersburg, FL, Diane Danhieux, Green Bay, WI, Timothy (Kathleen) Danhieux, Menominee, MI, and Carrie Danhieux, Muskego, WI; three granddaughters, Melissa Hollon, Taeler Danhieux, and Maddie Kotz; two great granddaughters, Cassidy Hollon and Harmony Danhieux. Bernie is also survived by his sister Isabelle Stroobants, Appleton, brother Robert, Mesa, AZ, sister-in-law Deolia Danhieux, Henderson, NV, brother-in-law Richard (Evelyn) Loeffler, Coleman, WI, and nieces and nephews. Additionally, Bernie was the adopted Grandfather of Sarah and Matthew Gomall. Upon retirement Bernie took up the game of golf in earnest, organizing a Wednesday men’s golf club which played at different courses each week. In the winter he built radio controlled airplanes which he flew in the summer. Bernie and Charelene also enjoyed traveling to warmer climates in the winter, spending time in Florida, Mississippi and Arizona. Bernie is remembered by his family, friends, and acquaintances as a wonderful, giving person, always ready to lend a hand or add a laugh. He did this in a quiet, respectful manner that defined his life as a devoted father, husband, and Christian. Bernie said, “Ice cream is the secret to my long life.” Gathering of family of friends will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew Catholic Church 130 St. Matthew Street. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 A.M. at the church with Rev. Larry Seidl officiating. Entombment at Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. The Danhieux family is grateful and sends thanks to Unity Hospice and Odd Fellow Nursing Facility, for their exceptional care and heartfelt compassion. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests donations to these organizations.
