Gene Charlier

Gene E. Charlier, 78, Green Bay, passed away at home on Wednesday, August 6, 2008. Gene was born on August 1, 1930 in Luxemburg, the son of the late Jule and Stella (Jorgensen) Charlier. He was a graduate of Luxemburg High School. Gene served his country in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1953. He was employed as a bookkeeper at Schuster Construction for 29 years. Later he worked as a custodian at Franklin Middle School until his retirement. On November 17, 1951 he married the former Virginia “Ginny” Lindgren. Ginny preceded him in death on December 12, 1992. He married Mary Nelson on January 1, 1996. Gene loved the outdoors and enjoyed times spent hunting, fishing, and bike riding. He was a creative and talented woodworker as well as an avid Green Bay Packers fan who enjoyed watching and attending the games. He also had a great interest in golf, both on T.V. and out on the course. Gene was a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church where he faithfully served in many areas of ministry. In recent years he was a member at Oakbrook Church in DePere. Gene’s life was defined by his faith and commitment to God and family. He had a unique gift that enabled him to turn strangers into friends using common interests, acquaintances or experiences. A true gentleman, Gene touched many lives and he will be greatly missed. Gene is survived by his wife Mary, his children and their spouses, Steve and Connie Charlier, Craig and Pamela Charlier, Dennis and Linda Charlier, Chris and Katye Charlier, Paul and Rose Nelson, Ann Nelson and Mike Engebose, Tom and Mary Nelson; 16 grandchildren, Leah (Jon), Joshua, Carly, Jessamyn, Samuel, Elizabeth, Alyssa, Nicholas, Olivia, Patrick, Brian, Megan, Abby, Sam, Connor and Logan. He is further survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Betty and Jim Anthony, Carole Ball, twin sister Janice and Jim Cummer. He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Jim Ball. Patrick, Brian, Megan A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, (Today) August 10, 2008 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. at Oakbrook Church 3600 Lost Lane, DePere. Funeral Service 3:30 P.M. at the church with Rev. Terry Martell officiating. Burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established in Gene’s name. The family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Luke Warpinski and his staff for the care and compassion shown to Gene.
